Summer Kickoff (All Ages)

Kick off your summer and celebrate Plano’s 150th birthday at Plano Public Library! Enjoy a birthday themed kickoff party with games, prizes, scavenger hunts, balloon artists, puppet petting zoos and more. Pick up a 2023 Candle Quest game board and reading log at any of our five library locations!

Special Kickoff Events

  • Harrington – World of Worms with SEED – 10am-12pm
    Worms Eat Our Garbage: Dig in the dirt with the City of Plano’s Sustainability and Environmental Education division. We’ll teach you to use specialized red worms to compost your plant-based food waste. Learn to set up and maintain a worm bin, and to harvest and use the worm castings.
  • Parr – Explore DART – 10am-12pm
    Catch a glimpse of transportation options in Plano including GoLink, DART light rail and the new Silver Line, under construction now. See what’s coming and speak with DART representatives and the Silver Line Safety Team. Take a ride on a DART bus.
  • Schimelpfenig – Waste Ace with SEED – 10am-12pm
    Are You a Waste Ace? Can you recycle a pizza box? Is all plastic recyclable? Show us what YOU know and prove yourself the family recycling champ! Care for our planet with activities from the City of Plano’s Sustainability and Environmental Education division.
  • Davis – Celebrate Trails: Bike Checks with Plano Parks & Rec – 12-2pm
    Explore Plano’s fabulous trail system for biking, running, walking or strolling as you journey to the library for Summer Learning Kick-off! Enjoy National Trails Day and bring your bike to Davis Library for safety checks and minor adjustments with professional mechanics from REI. Plano Parks & Recreation staff and volunteers will be available to answer questions and will have trail maps and safety information available, along with activities for kids. Join the fun!
  • Haggard – Spin Art with Crayola Imagine – 12-2pm
    Hop on a bike to produce art, an activity that enhances critical thinking, encourages creativity, sharpens motor skills, and lowers stress. Spin art is a mixture of planned and unplanned art incorporating techniques such as color blocking, mixture of the colors, raindrops and rings that can help achieve a unique painting for the creator. Have fun and build memories as you pedal and enjoy the surprise created by the centrifugal force.
  • Haggard – Activities and Resources for Neurodiverse individuals – 12-2pm
    Meet staff from Plano Parks & Recreation and Plano Public Library who facilitate activities for neurodiverse children, youth and adults throughout the year. Hear about a variety of activities, spaces and materials thoughtfully planned with the needs of neurodiverse individuals in mind.
